The deep blue waters of Lake Atitlan, in the highlands of Guatemala, fill a crater 10 miles long and 5 miles wide surrounded by volcanoes, corn fields and Mayan villages. About 100 miles east of Guatemala City, the lake is a popular vacation spot for Guatemalans, North Americans and Europeans. While Spanish is spoken at most hotels and restaurants, residents of the villages around the lake mostly speak one or more indigenous languages.
